The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE. This is the first release of the stable/10 branch.

Some of the highlights:

• GCC is no longer installed by default on architectures where clang(1) is the default compiler.

• Unbound has been imported to the base system as the local caching DNS resolver.

• BIND has been removed from the base system.

• make(1) has been replaced with bmake(1), obtained from the NetBSD Project.

• pkg(7) is now the default package management utility.

• pkg_add(1), pkg_delete(1), and related tools have been removed.

• Major enhancements in virtualization, including the addition of bhyve(8), virtio(4), and native paravirtualized drivers providing support for FreeBSD as a guest operating system on Microsoft Hyper-V.

• TRIM support for Solid State Drives has been added to ZFS.

• Support for the high-performance LZ4 compression algorithm has been added to ZFS.

Oracle ha effettuato l'update di Java 7 SDK. JDK 7u10 è adesso certificata per Mac OS X 10.8 e Windows 8.

The JDK 7u10 release includes the following enhancements:

• The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument.
• The ability to select the desired level of security for unsigned applets, Java Web Start applications, and embedded JavaFX applications that run in a browser. Four levels of security are supported. This feature can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument.
• New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated.

Office 2013, la nuova versione della suite di produttività di Microsoft è Release to Manufacturing (RTM). Come annunciato sul blog ufficiale, Office 2013 sarà disponibile per il primo trimestre del 2013. A partire dal prossimo 19 ottobre i clienti che acquisteranno Office 2010 riceveranno Office 2013 gratuitamente appena sarà disponibile.

Il 29 ottobre a San Francisco Microsoft presenterà ufficialmente Windows Phone 8, nome in codice "Apollo", l'ultima versione del suo sistema operativo per dispositivi mobili. Lo stesso giorno Microsoft dovrebbe rendere disponibile agli sviluppatori il Windows Phone 8 SDK.

Qualche giorno prima, il 25 ottobre, a New York ci sarà la presentazione di Windows 8 e dei tablet Surface. A partire dalla mezzanotte del giorno dopo, 26 ottobre, saranno disponibili per la vendita.

The X.Org Foundation and the global community of X.Org developers announce the release of X11R7.7 - Release 7.7 of the X Window System, Version 11. This release is the eighth modular release of the X Window System. The next full release will be X11R7.8 and may happen in 2013.

This release is part of our celebration of 25 years of X11, recognizing the 25th anniversary of X Window System Version 11, Release 1 (X11R1) on September 15, 1987. We will continue this celebration later this year at the X.Org Developer Conference, hosted by SuSE in Nürnberg, Germany on September 19-21.

X11R7.7 supports Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and GNU Hurd systems. It incorporates both new features and stability and correctness fixes, including support for reporting multi-touch events from touchpads and touchscreens which can report input from more than one finger at a time, smoother scrolling from scroll wheels, better cross referencing & formatting of the documentation, pointer barriers to control cursor movement, and synchronization fences to coordinate between X and other rendering engines such as OpenGL.

Microsoft ha allungato il periodo di supporto per i suoi sistemi operativi, Windows XP, Windows Vista e Windows 7. Secondo quanto scoperto da ZDNet Microsoft ha rivisto la data di fine supporto per i tre sistemi operativi Windows. In particolare Windows XP sarà supportato fino fino all'8 aprile 2014, Windows Vista (per il quale in precendenza la data di fine supporto era il 10 aprile 2012) sarà supportato, indipendentemente dalle versioni, fino all'11 aprile 2017 e Windows 7 sarà supportato, indipendentemente dalle versioni, fino al 14 gennaio 2020. In questo modo Microsoft porterà il periodo di supporto per i suoi sistemi operativi a 10 anni.
