This is the first release from the 4.2 branch of LibreOffice which contains many exciting new features, and is targeted for early adopters and private power users — for conservative requirements, we refer you to LibreOffice 4.1.4 from the previous series.

The following notes apply:

• This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 4.2.0 Release Candidate 4, so you don't need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.
• Mac version doesn't bundle the mediawiki extension
• The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.
• Our Windows binaries are digitally signed by The Document Foundation.
• For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.
• If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.
• Some menu entries have changed or added. If you miss something, that may be due to the use of customised menu settings from your previous LibreOffice installation.
• This version still contains a few annoying bugs.

This is the sixth release from the 3.6 branch of LibreOffice.
It contains many exciting new features, and is the recommended version for home and corporate users.

The following notes apply:

• This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 3.6.4 Release Candidate 3, so you don't need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.
• The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.
• For Windows users that have LibreOffice prior to version 3.4.5 installed, uninstall that beforehand. Otherwise, the upgrade to 3.6.4 may fail.
• For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.
• If you run Windows 2000, you may require this update before being able to install LibreOffice.
• If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.

• If you update from an earlier version, spellchecking might be broken. In this case, the following workaround helps:
  • On Linux, in a terminal window enter "rm -r ~/.config/libreoffice/3/user/extensions"
  • On Mac OS X, in a Terminal window enter "rm -r ~/Library/Application Support/LibreOffice/3/user/extensions"
  • On Windows, in a Command Prompt window enter "rmdir /q /s %appdata%LibreOffice3userextensions"
  • After that, please restart LibreOffice twice.
• The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.

New in version 7.0

La Document Foundation ha annunciato il rilascio di LibreOffice 3.3.4.

LibreOffice 3.3.4 fixes several bugs, the next maintenance release 3.3.5 is scheduled for October. In the meantime, development is continuing on the 3.4 series, which offers new features. The next version in that branch – LibreOffice 3.4.3 – is expected by the end of August.

The Document Foundation maintains two editions of LibreOffice: version 3.3.x caters to conservative users, who wish to stick to a proven release in deep maintenance mode, with increasingly infrequent updates, while the 3.4 branch provides a more modern and featurefull release. We therefore strongly recommend everyone to update to the 3.4 series in the near future.

There are a few issues still contained in this release, which will be addressed soon with upcoming bug fix releases:

• Cannot restore deleted text with change tracking
• Lost formatting with Excel XLS export
• MS Office 2010 complains about damaged MS Office 2003/XP documents created by LibreOffice 3.4
• PowerPoint PPTX files created by LibreOffice can't be opened by MS Office Web Apps; PowerPoint PPT files created by LibreOffice can't be opened by MS PowerPoint Viewer 2010 but they can be opened by MS Office
• MS OFFICE document recovery fails after crash
• Data in reports created by Report Wizard do not display all data records
• In forms, all radio buttons are selected
• Writer crashes when using undo-redo on moved formulas

OpenOffice dovrebbe diventare un progetto di Apache Software Foundation. È questa la proposta annunciata da Oracle tramite il suo vice presidente Luke Kowalski

"With today's proposal to contribute the OpenOffice.org code to The Apache Software Foundation's Incubator, Oracle continues to demonstrate its commitment to the developer and open source communities. Donating OpenOffice.org to Apache gives this popular consumer software a mature, open, and well established infrastructure to continue well into the future. The Apache Software Foundation's model makes it possible for commercial and individual volunteer contributors to collaborate on open source product development."

Dovrebbero quindi cadere i timori di quanti prevedevano per OpenOffice un futuro non più open source ne' da software freeware. The Document Foundation in un comunicato auspica "la riunificazione dei progetti OpenOffice.org e LibreOffice in una sola comunità di eguali", ma conclude che vi sono comunque ancora delle differenze in materia di licenze e membership tra Apache software foundation e il progetto LibreOffice.
